Cardiffs Best Sunday Roast

Cardiff Sunday Roast - Our guide to Cardiff's best Sunday Roasts

Is a Sunday even a Sunday without a Cardiff roast dinner? Some, including us, would argue not.

There’s nothing we enjoy more than tucking into a plate of roast meat, lashings of gravy and roast potatoes that are just the right ratio of fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside.

It’s no wonder it’s a British food staple, it’s making our mouths water just thinking about it.

In fact, we enjoy a Sunday lunch so much we took it upon ourselves to find you the best Cardiff Sunday roast dinners around. It was a hard task but still, someone had to do it!

Here’s our pick of the best Sunday Roasts in Cardiff.

6 of the best roasts in Cardiff that we think you should know about

Cardiff Roast Dinner

The Potted Pig

Set in the heart of the capital; a perfect location if you are on a stag do or hen weekend, is the The Potted Pig.

It’s location makes it perfect if you’re a visitor to the city or you’re meeting up with friends for a catch up over a delicious Cardiff Sunday Roast lunch.

Tucked away at the top of high street, the restaurant is located in a former bank vault which has been renovated to give its new tenants a modern and stylish home.

The Sunday menu offers a wide range of meats including pork (as you’d expect), beef and even pheasant if you’re looking to try something different.

Each Cardiff roast is served with roast potatoes, seasonal veg, cauliflower cheese, Yorkshire pudding and, of course, proper gravy.

Probably still not quite as good as your Mum’s but pretty close (just don’t tell her that!).

Chapel 1877

Chapel 1877 is a firm fine dining favourite every day of the week but Sundays are a day that are definitely not to be missed.

They serve one of the best Cardiff Sunday Roast’s thanks to their Three Meat Roast Platter which comes as part of their two- or three-course Sunday menus.

Don’t be fooled into thinking that the starters are a warm up and the desserts a wind down either; they’re equally delicious.

The only thing you’ll find disappointing about this Cardiff roast dinner will be your empty plate at the end!

Y Mochyn Du

Y Mochyn Du is best described as a ‘proper pub’, the sort of place you’d describe to someone if they didn’t know what a pub was.

If you’re searching for a Cardiff Sunday Roast that’s just as traditional, this should be near the top of your list of places to try.

Their roasts come with fresh locally sourced veg, roasties and quite frankly some of the best Yorkshire puddings we’ve ever laid our eyes on.

There’s no set Sunday menu but there are a variety of starters and some delicious desserts to choose from if you can find that extra little bit of room (go on, we believe in you).

There’s also a selection of specials available if any of your fellow diners don’t fancy one of the best roasts in Cardiff. Unlikely, we know, but it’s nice to have the option.

If you’re looking for a Cardiff Sunday Roast that caters for vegetarians and vegans, Milgi should be your first stop.

Situated on City Road, the restaurant serves some of the freshest, tastiest vegetarian food in South Wales and one of the best alternative Sunday roasts in Cardiff.

The staple of their Sunday lunch offering is probably the tastiest nut roast you’ll ever eat. In fact, we’d even go so far to say that the meat-eaters amongst you won’t mind forgoing their carnivorous cravings to give it a try.

It’s served with the traditional roast dinner staples; lashings of gravy; perfectly roasted potatoes and fresh, seasonal vegetables that change weekly depending on what’s available from local suppliers.

The Conway is a family-friendly gastropub and the perfect destination for a relaxed afternoon Cardiff Sunday Roast.

It’s Pontcanna location takes you away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre and a visit is also a brilliant excuse to take a Sunday stroll through the beautiful Bute Park on the way.

With its homely décor, walls lined with bookcases and cosy fireplaces, once you’re there you’ll never want to leave, especially once you’ve seen their menu!

It has, of course, one of the best roasts in Cardiff as well as some less conventional Sunday roast options, including fish dishes and vegetarian options to make sure everyone is catered for.

Society Standard

If you’re looking for a more laid-back lunch but still want a Cardiff Sunday Roast that’ll hit the spot, Society Standard is the place you want to be heading to.

Relatively new to the Cardiff roast dinner scene (if that’s not a thing, it should definitely be one), it’s earned its place amongst the culinary veterans of the capital and serves up one of the best roasts in Cardiff.

Choose from sirloin of beef or loin of pork or, if it’s just too difficult to decide, opt for their mixed roast.

Either way, you won’t be disappointed. Each roast comes with Yorkshire pudding, gravy and plenty of vegetables including seasonal greens, roasted root veg and cauliflower cheese.

These aren’t the only places in Cardiff that serve a Sunday roast and there are plenty to choose from but we think these are some of the best roasts around.

You don’t have to take our word for it, after all we’re not experts, but we do eat a lot of roast dinners.

There are also a great range of ethically run eateries in and around Cardiff which we are loving, please see the Hungry City Hippy website for more information on these brilliant venues.

And if you really don’t believe us then there’s only one way to find out. As they say the proof of the (Yorkshire) pudding is in the eating.
